March 10, 2017 Evening Update

Hi Boys and Girls,

Good Evening. It looks like the teams are starting to take their 24 hour rest. Things will be pretty quiet for awhile. We will also start seeing a shift in positions. The next 24-48 hours should be really interesting.

Who’s In First

As of 14:44 AST, There are 11 teams in Huslia. All appear to be resting and possibly taking their 24 hour rest. Tomorrow we should start seeing the teams move again.

  1. Mitch Seavey
  2. Nicolas Pettit
  3. Jessie Royer (pic on left is of Jessies dogs resting)
  4. Michelle Phillips
  5. Ralph Johannessen

REMEMBER: Until the time differential is applied to all times at the 24 hour Mandatory rest, we will not know who is truly in the lead. I predict this will happen by tomorrow night or sometime on Sunday.

Question of the day

What is a dropped dog?

Answer to previous question

What equipment is carried in the sled? There are mandatory items that must be carried in all sled on the trail. These items include: a cold weather sleeping bag, ax, snowshoes, Eight booties for each dog, cooker and pot, adequate amount of fuel, veterinarian notebook to be presented at each checkpoint, a cable drop line, non-chafing harness for each dog, and any promotional material provided by the Iditarod Trail Committee. Food for each dog plus emergency food must also be carried. This include snacks. The musher will also pack food for themselves, extra clothes, and personal items. If the team is planning to camp along the trail, the musher will pick up straw at the checkpoint to carry with them. That sure is a lot to carry!

Stay tuned. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

See you on the trail,

Gypsy
