March14, 2017 Evening Update

Hi Boys and Girls,

Hope you are having a great day. While we wait for Mitch to come into Nome, I thought we should see how the rest of the teams are doing. Even though we will have a winner soon, don’t forget there are other teams out there. The race isn’t over until the last team arrives in Nome.

Who’s In First

As of 14:09 AST, Mitch is just outside of Nome. . Dallas and Nicolas left White Mountain 13 minutes apart. They should be arriving into Safety soon. I wonder who will get there first. Joar has left White Mountain. Jessie and Wade Marrs are still in White Mountain.

Question of the day

What does the winner of the Iditarod receive?

Answer to previous question

On a dog team, every dog has a job. There are 4 different positions a dog can be in. Do you know what those positions are?

There are 4 positions on a dog team. They are lead dog, swing dog, team dog and wheel dog. A lead dog is in the front of the team. They are usually intelligent dogs who can read the trail and lead the other dogs. Next are the swing dogs. Swing dogs run directly behind the leaders. Their job is to help swing the team in the turns or curves. Next you’ll find the team dogs. These are good running dependable dogs. Wheel dogs run just in front of the sled. They are usually bigger dogs and their jo is to pull the sled out and around corners.

What is the Burled Arch- It is the finish line of the Iditarod in Nome.

There will be another update from Nome when Mitch crosses the finish line. Stay tuned!

See you on the trail,
