Dream a Dream Dog Farm is not only home to forty sled dogs and a border collie, but Jinx lives there too. Jinx reminds me of Danger, a cat that lived with Libby Riddles. Who is Libby Riddles? What is she famous for in the world of Iditarod? Libby has written Danger the Dog Yard Cat, Storm Run and Race Across Alaska. Danger, a cat who Libby adopted from the Nome animal Shelter, lived at the Riddles Kennel with fifty-seven sled dogs. The story is a delightful tale of a heroic cat in a sled dog’s world.
Libby raced in the 1985 Iditarod and after braving a horrendous storm, she became the first woman to win Iditarod. Storm Run and Race across Alaska tell of the challenges the weather created for Riddles. While more experienced mushers stayed back in the safety of the checkpoint, Libby dared to cover the miles from Shaktoolik to Koyuk. Race Across Alaska tells the story of Riddles becoming the first woman to win the Iditarod. Storm Run is a children’s version of the story.
How many women have won the Iditarod? Has any woman ever won more than one Iditarod? The answers to these questions can be found in the Iditarod Archives.
