The big news here is the announcement of where the race will start. With the lack of snow to cover the river ice, there was plenty of discussion about moving it way up north to Fairbanks. It was a unanimous decision by the ITC Board of Directors to re-start in Willow after hearing of an ambitious grooming plan. Picture then, a few days at the end of February when there be giant grooming equipment charging down the icy rivers to make some “fluff.” They’ve tested the depth of the river ice to make sure it’s thick enough to support the machines. Some of the mushers are very supportive of the decision while some have been critical. Really, you can please some of the people some of the time, all the people some of the time but NOT all the people all the time. Perhaps your teacher would like to initiate a discussion within your classroom about the topic.
Iditarod Teacher on the Trail™, Jen Reiter, has a very busy day with a museum visit this morning and three presentations at an elementary school this afternoon.
Have just checked the weather – IT’S SNOWING IN WILLOW! Also Aurora activity is listed as a 5 for tonight!
