Look at this handsome pair of athletes at the front of Monica Zappa’s team. She’s been raising a competitive team since moving to Kasilof in 2010. Growing up in Cumberland, Wisconsin Monica has been around sled dogs most of her life. Both parents have run the long distance John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon from Duluth, MN to Grand Marais and back to Duluth. Zappa holds degrees in meteorology and geography. She’s been working and training with Tim Osmar. She works in the summers as a commercial fisherwoman and holds other odd jobs to pay the bills. Monica says her dogs deserve that opportunity to see the 1049-mile trail to Nome.
