What A Race!

Hello friends,

BOWWOW! What a race! At this writing only 16 miles separates Brent Sass and Dallas Seavey. 39 miles beyond Seavey is Aaron Burmeister. With Sass only 181 miles from the finish line, this is a nail biter.

The burled arch in Nome, Alaska, is the greets teams at the finish of the Iditarod Race.

Speaking of the finish line, my friend Lucy from Michigan wants to know how they came up with where the race would end. During the very first Iditarod 50 years ago, teams were heading toward Nome when race workers realized there was no actual finish line. Someone ran into a store and grabbed some Kool-Aid to make a finish line for teams. The famous Burled Arch in Nome was first used in 1975 (read more about it here) due to the vision of Red Fox Olson. The 5000 pound arch was put up each year until it deteriorated and was run over by a forklift. Another arch was built and erected in 2000. Since then, thousands of my K9 friends have finished the race under the Burled Arch. Awooooo! Thanks for the great question Lucy.

Keep watching your trackers! A winner will be crossing under the Burled Arch soon. If you have a question for me, please email me at askzumadog@gmail.com. Questions will be answered in a future post.

Tail wags,
