Eleven mushers between the age of 14 and 17 will take to the trail on the last Saturday of February for the JR Iditarod. They’ll start the race on Knik Lake and travel 75 miles to the Yentna Station Roadhouse. They will camp, spending their required ten-hour rest, on the shore of the Yentna River. Top priority is dog care but then the teens will spend time with fellow mushers around the campfire. Before the sun rises on Sunday morning, the juniors will take to the trail for the final 75 miles of the race, finishing in Willow. The trail is reported in good condition with plenty of snow including the five inches that fell today. Markers like this are plentiful along the trail guiding the mushers on their 150 mile journey.
